Microplane, an essential tool…

I will, from time to time, present to you some of the tools I use. While some are essentials to me like the Microplane, others where just a plain waste of money.

My love for lemons is no secret and whenever I use the last one I almost get hives! I guess it will not be surprising to know that the Microplane is one of my favorite tools to use in the kitchen. Although it is super effective to grate citrus rind it’s also great for ginger, nutmeg and parmesan cheese.

Up until I received my Microplane for Christmas a few years back, I would use a straight peeler also known as a French Économe peeler. This worked relatively well but I still had to finely chop the rind most of the time. Not the case with this wonderful tool which was in fact developed as a wood rasp.

By now, cooking aficionados worldwide are familiar with the story: A Canadian housewife commandeers one of her husband’s favorite woodworking tools and discovers it effortlessly produces the lightest, most wonderful orange zest she could have ever imagined. It’s 1994, her Armenian Orange cake is a huge success and her husband’s Microplane® rasp has morphed into a must-have kitchen grater.

Mine is I believe the first original model that came out but it’s now available in several sizes and colors. Prices have gone down quite a bit as well. You can now have a nice one for under $20.00.

If you’re a first timer using this tool, make sure it’s not right after a new mani! It can do quite a number on your nails if you’re not careful!
